Dr. Mattson graduated from Apple Valley High School before earning his B.S. in Physics from the University of Minnesota – Duluth. He pursued three years of graduate study in Biochemistry at the University of Minnesota – Twin Cities and received his Doctor of Optometry from the Illinois College of Optometry in 2001.

While in optometry school, he was inducted into both the Tomb & Key Optometric Honor Fraternity and the Beta Sigma Kappa International Optometric Honor Society. He also received the Robert C. Morrow Scholarship and the Exceptional Tutor Award for his efforts in sensory and color vision, binocular vision, biochemistry, and ophthalmic optics.

Dr. Mattson earned clinical honors in low vision at the Illinois Eye Institute, and went on to complete high-level externships in:

  • Ocular disease at the Wolfe Clinic (Ames, IA)

Personal Background

Although a graduate of Apple Valley, Dr. Mattson’s family roots run deep in the area. His great-great-grandfather emigrated from what is now the Czech Republic and settled in nearby Lonsdale, MN in 1875 — a legacy Dr. Mattson proudly continues (especially when kolacky are involved).

Life in Lakeville

Dr. Mattson and his wife, Chialing, raised their two children, Madelynn and Leo, in Lakeville. He spent years coaching Madelynn’s softball teams and supporting Leo through Boy Scouts.

When he's not in the clinic, Dr. Mattson enjoys traveling with his family — including a recent 70-mile hike along Hadrian’s Wall in England. You’ll often find him out on the golf course, in the woods during hunting season, or hiking local trails with his Yorkie, Toby.
